Life rarely follows the path we have planned. Some encounters are found in unexpected moments; some memories quietly stay between the pages.
一句话,需要等待翻译;
“Bookmark.”
“Special smell.”
天门山明信片;
土家纺织杯垫;
旅行小账本;
一本书,因为印章拥有了风景;
因为香气拥有了温度;
A Summer Preserved in Pages
July 27, 2026 · Monday · Sunny
I never planned to come here in the summer of 2026.
On July 20, my mother was involved in an accident while riding her electric scooter and was taken to Zhangjiajie Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.
The hospital is only one street away from the Fantastical Dayong City.
Because of this unexpected event, I found myself here.
Over the next few days, my mother would undergo surgery, and my time was devoted to accompanying and taking care of her.
Yet in the moments between waiting and caring, I wanted to walk through this familiar yet unfamiliar city, searching for the small wonders hidden in everyday life.
That day, I stepped into Fantastical Dayong City.
There were traditional cultures, ethnic performances, and many little surprises waiting to be discovered.
I carried a book with me — The Wisdom of Improvisation.
For me, this book was already a reminder:
Many beautiful things in life are not planned in advance.
I collected stamps there.
One by one.
Until the pages were filled.
Those small marks transformed an ordinary book into a memory belonging to this summer.
Later, I had to leave because I needed to bring a freshly prepared local chicken back for my family.
I left reluctantly.
Sometimes, the most beautiful moments happen just when you are about to leave.
This afternoon, rain fell over Zhangjiajie.
I returned to the hospital room.
While the sound of rain echoed outside the window, I opened The Wisdom of Improvisation again.
Looking at the pages covered with stamps, I suddenly thought:
Ancient Chinese people said:
"Within books, there are beautiful encounters; within books, there are treasures."
Then I wondered:
Could my own book also carry a unique scent of its own?
A natural fragrance within a book.
So I set out again, searching for a scent.
A fragrance shop was temporarily looked after by the owner of a local liquor store.
The air was filled with different aromas, and I chose a special scented bookmark.
The bookmark needed time to dry.
While waiting, I heard lively music coming from nearby.
I left my things at the liquor store and followed the sound.
A traditional ethnic dance performance was coming to an end.
The next performance was Tujia Hand Dance.
The moment the dancers moved their arms, I felt something awaken inside me.
I wanted to join them.
If I had not been recording the moment, perhaps I would already have been dancing among the crowd.
After the performance, I continued recording with my phone.
As the crowd slowly dispersed, my eyes met with two strangers.
At that moment, there were no words.
But I believe some connections do not require translation.
A glance, a moment of attention, and genuine sincerity can all be understood.
They came over and asked:
“Did you record any photos or videos?”
I answered:
“Yes.”
Then we exchanged contact information.
They asked me in simple Chinese:
“Do you have WeChat?”
I replied:
“I have Twitter and Instagram.”
Their eyes lit up.
In a place far from their home, meeting someone from another part of the world was a beautiful surprise.
The internet connection, however, did not work as smoothly as expected.
The apps refused to open, and I became anxious.
Standing there waiting was not a solution.
So I invited them:
“Let’s sit in the liquor shop for a while.”
My book and belongings were still there, and they could also take a short rest.
What followed was an interesting form of communication without barriers.
We came from different countries and spoke different languages.
Chinese, English, French, and translation apps became our bridge.
A sentence required waiting for translation.
An idea required repeated confirmation.
Yet communication never stopped.
Because what we truly wanted to express was more than language itself.
I took out The Wisdom of Improvisation.
I told them:
“This is my book.”
“I collected these stamps here.”
“Now, I want to add another memory to it — a scent.”
“Bookmark.”
“Special smell.”
I invited them to leave a few words on my pages.
While they carefully wrote their blessings, I began thinking:
What should I give them?
Finally, I prepared some small gifts from Zhangjiajie:
A postcard of Tianmen Mountain;
A Tujia woven coaster;
A small travel notebook;
And a traditional-style folding fan.
Inside their notebooks, I wrote my wishes and left my Gmail address.
A book gained scenery because of stamps.
It gained warmth because of fragrance.
And because of the words written by two French friends, it gained a memory that crossed languages and borders.
In the summer of 2026,
among the mountains and rivers of Zhangjiajie,
a brief encounter quietly left its mark.
Until we meet again.
Wherever mountains and rivers meet, there may be another reunion.
The amazing thing was that until we said goodbye, we still did not know each other's full names.
We came from different countries and were traveling along different paths.
Yet because of a performance, an exchanged glance, and a sincere conversation beyond language, we met on a summer day in Zhangjiajie.
The encounter was brief.
The farewell was sudden.
But some memories are not measured by the length of time.
A French message written on a page.
A postcard from Zhangjiajie.
A notebook filled with blessings.
A fan carrying the spirit of the East.
All of them became the marks left behind by this meeting.
I used to think language was the distance between us.
But sincerity became the bridge.
I do not know whether we will meet again somewhere in the world.
But I believe:
Wherever mountains and rivers meet, there is always a chance for reunion.
Thank you, summer of 2026.
For allowing me to meet friends from afar among the mountains and rivers of my hometown.
May we each continue our own journeys.
And may we meet again someday, somewhere beneath another sky.
Even now, the fragrance still lingers on my hands.
It reminds me that everything that happened today was not just a dream.
That book gained a landscape through the collected stamps, a scent through the bookmark, and warmth through the messages left by two friends from afar.
Some memories do not exist only in photographs; they are also hidden in scents.
Whenever I smell this fragrance again, I may be reminded of this summer of 2026 — of that brief yet beautiful encounter among the mountains and rivers of Zhangjiajie.
Un été entre les pages
Lundi 27 juillet 2026 · Temps clair
Alors je me suis demandé :
« Tu as WeChat ? »
Je leur ai répondu :
« I have Twitter and Instagram. »
Une carte postale de la montagne Tianmen ;
Un dessous de verre tissé par les artisans Tujia ;
Un petit carnet de voyage ;
一本书,因为这场相逢有了新的篇章;
Sometimes, the surprises in life do not arrive according to our plans.
They may be hidden in an unexpected stop, in a performance that is about to end, or in the eyes of a stranger.
We were simply travelers following our own paths, yet through a small coincidence, we met each other in Zhangjiajie during the summer.
There was no prior arrangement, no chance to truly know each other, not even knowing each other’s full names.
Yet a dance, a book, and a few sincere conversations beyond language allowed two people from different countries to leave behind a warm and unforgettable memory.
Later, I realized that perhaps this is one of the most beautiful meanings of traveling.
We search for distant places, but often, without expecting it, we encounter the gifts that distance brings to us.
A book gained a new chapter because of this encounter.
A summer gained a special warmth because of this unexpected surprise.
Thank you, summer of 2026.
For allowing me to meet friends from France among the mountains and rivers of my hometown, and for bringing me a beautiful surprise from life itself.
May the mountains and rivers remain forever.
May every journey continue to bring new discoveries.
And may our paths cross again somewhere in the world.
